Escaping the cold for a golf safari to remember

CEO of Duca del Cosma Africa Adolf Stoffberg invites golfers to South Africa

For many golfers, winter can seem to drag on forever, as they are forcibly separated by Mother Nature from the game they love. If they would rather be a world away from the winter doldrums, the perfect tonic could be a golf trip to Cape Town and the Western Cape region of South Africa.

A rare combination of delights

For one of the world’s most renowned golf destinations, the Western Cape has the added distinction of having as eclectic and varied off-course attractions as any golf hotspot in the world. A golf trip to the Western Cape can provide all the quality golf you can handle in an ideal climate along the oceanfront, including Cape Town, the location where the Indian Ocean and the South Atlantic meet. A visit should include options as diverse as exploring the mountains above the Cape, visiting wildlife preserves where some of the greatest species in the world can be found and relaxing in the Western Cape’s world-famous vineyard options.

Get yourself a guide

Duca del Cosma is a popular golf brand in South Africa, and we turned to one of the top local experts, Adolf Stoffberg, the CEO of Duca del Cosma Africa, for advice on how to get the most out of your golf trip to South Africa. Because there are so many options, “to those visiting South Africa for the first time, I would highly recommend a guide,” Stoffberg says. He personally recommends Ozzies Golf Guide as a knowledgeable source that can take the time to learn what kind of trip you would like to have and provide excellent advice on how to get the most out of your visit.

A visit to Fancourt

Ever since hosting the Presidents Cup in 2003, Fancourt has been a South African name well-known by golf fans around the world. The club and hotel are actually home to three top-shelf Gary Player designs, with The Links Course the venue that hosted the Presidents Cup and the layout that many consider to be the best in all of South Africa. Fancourt’s other two layouts, Montagu and Outeniqua, are not far behind, with both being considered among the top 20 courses in the country. With the Outeniqua Mountains forming a majestic backdrop, The Links Course is an old-world style course spiced up with some modern twists.

A Pearl of a place to golf

The combination of mountains and nearby oceans makes the Western Cape an exceptional region for golf. Another course where the magnificent setting has been used to great effect is Pearl Valley, sitting just below the Drakenstein Mountains up above Cape Town. Currently ranked as the No. 5 course in South Africa by Golf Digest, Pearl Valley is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design which was christened in 2003 by a match between Nicklaus and Gary Player. It has hosted the South African Open three times. The course is part of the Val de Vie resort, near a number of vineyards and lush with gardens that provide habitat for the 132 different species of birds that have been spotted at the resort.

Along the lagoon, there’s Arabella

Another birder’s paradise (not to mention golfers, too) is Arabella Golf Club, with its most distinctive feature being the Bot River Lagoon, which forms the backdrop for a number of holes. As you would hope for your South African experience, a premium is placed on striking a balance between nature and golf on the course. Arabella is a past host of the Nelson Mandela Invitational, and was recently ranked as the ninth-best golf course in the country by Golf Digest.

See it to appreciate it

If you’ve ever seen pictures of the Western Cape region or, even better, visited there previously, you know this is one of the most spectacular natural settings in the world. It also has a seemingly endless supply of outstanding golf. Courses like George, Simola, Pezula, Steenberg and Erinvale all offer the kind of golf worth traveling for. If you ask Stoffberg what distinguishes the Western Cape from other destinations, he almost can’t stop with the plaudits. He offers “quality and variety of courses, golf situated close to top hotels, restaurants and wineries, moderate temperatures with a great climate and value for your money.”
