I’m working 7 days a week on my golf game, on rainy days I’ve got to make sure that my trainings are as effective as always. How do I do this? Below you’ll find my favorite things that I do on rainy days.

On the one hand I try to use the weather to work on my skills when playing in the rain, on the other hand I also want to do some standard drills and some work on my technique. These last two can often be practiced better in indoor facilities than in the rain, as you don’t have to fight against the rain or firm wind. 

I like to start the day of with working on my technique, you can very easily do this indoor as the flight of the ball is of less importance now. In the picture below, you can see my favorite set-up for swing work.

In the pictures you can see that I am standing on a pressure plate. It’s called Boditrak and it measures all the forces a player puts into the ground and the weigh shifts he makes during the swing. This is really important to me because if the sequencing is off you will always be searching for compensations in the swing.

Furthermore, you can see the white radar at 3 meters straight behind the ball. This radar is called a Flightscope and it measures loads of data which are shown on the tablet and screen. The data will tell you something about only one part of the swing and it’s the only part that matters: the impact. 

You can exactly see in which direction your club is moving, with which speed, the spin you give to the ball, how far the ball is flying and rolling and way more data. In short: my perfect company on rainy days!

When I’m finished with this after a couple of hours of good work I move on to putting drills. In bad weather I prefer doing these drills inside as I want greens that react consistently. In the picture on the next page you can see one out of many set-ups you could make with some tees.

The last thing I would like to do is training my skills in the rain. I put on all the layers of clothes, rain jacket, rain gloves and I start playing some holes in the rain. Because although this might not be the ideal conditions, you will definitely face them more than a few times a year.

Remember, everyone has the same conditions so… Rain can even be in your favor if you are trained and prepared better than the other players!

A visit to Fancourt

Ever since hosting the Presidents Cup in 2003, Fancourt has been a South African name well-known by golf fans around the world. The club and hotel are actually home to three top-shelf Gary Player designs, with The Links Course the venue that hosted the Presidents Cup and the layout that many consider to be the best in all of South Africa. Fancourt’s other two layouts, Montagu and Outeniqua, are not far behind, with both being considered among the top 20 courses in the country. With the Outeniqua Mountains forming a majestic backdrop, The Links Course is an old-world style course spiced up with some modern twists.

A Pearl of a place to golf

The combination of mountains and nearby oceans makes the Western Cape an exceptional region for golf. Another course where the magnificent setting has been used to great effect is Pearl Valley, sitting just below the Drakenstein Mountains up above Cape Town. Currently ranked as the No. 5 course in South Africa by Golf Digest, Pearl Valley is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design which was christened in 2003 by a match between Nicklaus and Gary Player. It has hosted the South African Open three times. The course is part of the Val de Vie resort, near a number of vineyards and lush with gardens that provide habitat for the 132 different species of birds that have been spotted at the resort.

Along the lagoon, there’s Arabella

Another birder’s paradise (not to mention golfers, too) is Arabella Golf Club, with its most distinctive feature being the Bot River Lagoon, which forms the backdrop for a number of holes. As you would hope for your South African experience, a premium is placed on striking a balance between nature and golf on the course. Arabella is a past host of the Nelson Mandela Invitational, and was recently ranked as the ninth-best golf course in the country by Golf Digest.

KLM Open 2018 at The Dutch

Although the game of golf is known as a Scottish creation, it also had a strong early influence from The Netherlands. If you want to understand how that storyline has come full circle, you need to experience one of Europe’s top modern course,The Dutch, for yourself. This year’s KLM Open was held at The Dutch, an outstanding course that was built according to the highest European standards. Five reasons that make The Dutch a must-play European course:

1. The historic connection

When you think of the origins of golf, the natural links courses formed by the meeting of the ocean and the land in Scotland come to mind. The UK and The Netherlands are less than 200 miles apart on either side of the North Sea, so it makes sense that similar conditions could also be found in The Netherlands. The ambitions for The Dutch were lofty – ownership wanted a course that could contend to host the 2018 Ryder Cup, which was just played at Le Golf National outside of Paris. So while they didn’t land the Ryder Cup this time, golfers and visitors to The Netherlands did end up with a new world-class golf challenge in their own backyard. Montgomerie’s stated goal was to create the best greens in all of continental Europe, and ever since its opening in 2011, The Dutch aspires to live up to that standard every day. If you pride yourself on being a great putter, The Dutch is a test you don’t want to miss. A famous member of the club is Joost Luiten, who has improved his putting skills by practicing on The Dutch. Greens are kept around 11 on the stimpmeter in terms of speed and they are full of undulations and challenging potential pin positions Montgomerie created with tournament golf in mind.

3. The level of service

You are capable of playing a bad round of golf (and there’s really not much more disappointing of an experience as a player than getting psyched up to play a top course and then struggling.) But even if you are unfortunate enough not to bring your “A” game to The Dutch, the staff is going to make sure you have a great day at the golf course. Along with conditioning, service was another huge priority that was emphasized from the day the course was first conceived. The clubhouse has the look and feel of Scotland, and every amenity that you expect from a top-level club can be found at The Dutch. The idea was to create a course that not just specialized in golf, but also in developing an environment where those who mix business with golf are comfortable in both pursuits. From dining to locker rooms to relaxing, The Dutch delivers.

4. It’s a test made for the best

Colin Montgomerie does not apologize for making The Dutch demanding. Of course it has multiple sets of tees so you can choose a length appropriate for your game, but navigating the course was meant to challenge the best players in the world. It has done that each of the last three years as the site of the KLM Open on the European Tour. The gorse where many an Open Championship title hopes have been lost through the years is also plentiful on The Dutch, but so are the many waterways that most people would associate with The Netherlands. For instance, hole No. 11, with water in play off the tee left and then splitting the fairway and then a second water threat from a lake behind the green, was ranked the ninth-toughest scoring hole on the European Tour in 2017. Because the terrain of the country naturally tends to be flat, the design team moved a lot of dirt to create the humps and mounds so often associated with links golf. In short, The Dutch is not a golf course to be attacked but to be managed if you want to have a successful round.

5. The Dutch is a showcase of Dutch construction skills

Even though its location is inland, about 44 km from Rotterdam, The Dutch has true Dutch character – that is, it is located on former farmland that is a few feet below sea level. So while you may not appreciate it while you are actually playing The Dutch, it took a lot of work to create the contemporary-looking golf challenge that is all around you. The soil itself was not right for a links layout, so a substantial amount of dirt had to be brought in to create a top layer that was appropriate. The lowland qualities of the original property also required innovation, as new technology for golf was deployed. Air-filled concrete was put in place beneath the green complexes to ensure that over time there would be no sinking.

Passion and creativity are the words that first come to mind when the name Baldovino Mattiazzo is mentioned. As the founder of the famous Italian golf shoe and apparel company Duca del Cosma, Mattiazzo has a flare for the contemporary and a boldness to go against the grain. His golf shoe designs are anything but traditional. Using only the finest materials, Duca Del Cosma shoes have been turning the golf fashion upside down since Mattiazzo founded the company in 2004.

Mattiazzo’s road to the golf fashion industry is a colorful and storied one. Born in Venice, he was constantly surrounded by creativity. From art to acting, his senses were stimulated from an early age. His career in fashion started in Munich as a garments pattern maker for the progressive rock band Be-Bop Deluxe. Realizing he had found his true passion, Mattiazo decided to enroll in the world-renown Sarteco Fashion School in Florence.  After graduating as a top student, Mattiazo had little trouble finding employment in Italy with several prominent fashion companies like Grido and Motion. Wanting to expand his horizons, Mattiazzo moved to London and took a job at Red or Dead but the salary barely allowed him to pay his bills. One day Baldovino and Antje received the gift of golf lessons from her parents. After their first lesson they became hooked. Mattiazzo describes his addiction as a beautiful virus and something he pursues every chance he gets.  

When Baldovino was introduced to the golf sport he could never have imagined he would one day make such a big impact on the sport!

Realizing that golf fashion lacked the style and creativity that was in his blood, Mattiazzo and his wife founded Duca del Cosma in 2004. He distinctly remembers his first experience at Ispo Fair where other golf shoe manufacturers laughed at and ridiculed his wild colors, eccentric patterns and spikeless soles. It was at this moment that Mattiazzo knew he was going to revolutionize the golf shoe industry.

Many golfers recall their teenage years learning the game as some of their most enjoyable time on the course. Fiorella Ghaboli, a 13-year-old golf talent from Germany, is a prime example of how the phase of discovering golf can still be true joy. 

The next Jordan Spieth may be a girl. It could be a player from another country. Such is the universal nature of golf’s appeal and availability today that those learning the game find inspiration in how a player plays as much as who the player is. That’s why Fiorella Ghaboli, a 13-year-old golf talent who plays out of Frankfurter Golf Club in Germany, looks at a 25-year-old Texan on the U.S. PGA Tour and sees inspiration for her game.

“I’m inspired most by Jordan Spieth. I totally love his swing,” says Fiorella, whose promise at such a young age has made her one of Duca del Cosma’s brand ambassadors. “He is the best putter on tour that I know of. Is his style closest to mine? I couldn’t tell. I don’t think my swing looks like a professional one.” 

We don’t like to break such news to someone so young, Fiorella, but most players are rarely truly satisfied with their swing. Even Tiger Woods is now on to the fifth different swing he has used in dominating the golf world over the last 20 years.

Focus on the journey, not only the destination

But the process of learning the game -- the feeling of making progress and holding out hope that today could bring your best golf yet -- is a feeling you never lose. And it is most intense, as well as realistic, when you are in your teenage years. 

“Golf is a fun sport. I love to play with my team, but I also don’t shy away from individual competitions,” Fiorella says. “That is what is so cool about the sport, that you can play it individually or as part of a team. When one day things don’t go as planned, I remember my accomplishments so far. That totally motivates me.”

Now that is the perfect perspective to have when you are 13!

The love for golf started an an early age for Fiorella

Fiorella first started swinging a club when she was the age of four, and by age six, she was playing in her first tournament. Sometimes young golfers struggle with the weight of their own expectations, but that doesn’t seem to describe Fiorella’s experience thus far.

“I have had many different experiences that I love to look back at through golf,” she says. “Every round brought me joy. Of course, I have to fully focus during tournaments and training so I can get better, but you need to have fun either way!”

German Junior GolfTour Championship

Her most recent enjoyable experience was also quite successful -- she placed tied for fifth overall in the German Junior GolfTour Championship played in early October at the Berlin Golf Club Stolper Heide. Her four-round total included a fine 78 in the third round, which featured an even-par showing of 36 on the first nine. Her already already impressive handicap of 4,0, is now lowering even further. Fiorella’s best score so far in her career was a round of 3-over par at Golf Club Rosenhof. “That day everything went smoothly somehow,” she recalls. “I made every putt and didn’t experience any gaffes.” She was so much in the groove that she equalled that score the following round at Golf Club Rosenhof.

Highlights in the career of  a young golf talent

Other highlights of her young career include winning the Hesse region championship for players 12-and-under in 2017 and taking third-place honors in the Hessen Championship for players 14-and-under earlier this year.

She also got to experience international play for the first time last summer, playing for Germany in a junior tournament in Belgium. “It was wonderful that so many totally different countries were present. I played with a Chinese girl and a Dutch girl. The communication was also great! I had so much fun to play with my team for Germany,” Fiorella says.

Attending Solheim Cup competitions

Fiorella got a glimpse of top-level pros in 2015, when she attended one of the most dramatic Solheim Cup competitions in the history of that event. It was held in Germany at Golf Club St. Leon-Rot, with Europe nearly pulling off the victory in the closest Solheim Cup in history, falling to the U.S. by a score of 14 ½-13 ½. Two Germans who are still ranked among the top 100 women in the world in the Rolex Cup rankings, Sandra Gal and Caroline Masson, were among the players on the European side, and Fiorella was thrilled when she came home with an autograph from Gal.

Never stop learning!

Fiorella is continuing with golf instruction and knows her game still needs growth as she continues to grow over the next few years. Eventually, she would like to become good enough to earn a college scholarship (to where, she isn’t sure, but she thinks she wants to study a field involving science and numbers) and hopefully progress to the point where she can become a pro.

Playing golf in the rain: advice from the golf pros!

Duca del Cosma sought advice from the golf pros for their best tricks to playing golf in the rain.

1. Be prepared

The fairways are surrounded by trees with leaves in all shades from yellow to red. The highlight of this new collection is our new Starwood Red with an easy hook and loop closure system and is also available in black. With this shoe, you will be the star on and off the golf courses this autumn. The smooth leather upper, as well the leather lining gives you this luxurious feel. The hook and loop closure system is very convenient. The trend in this season is vulcanized rubber outsoles to ensure the sneaker look and feel of this very comfortable golf shoe. It was magic in the making when Ashun Wu won the 99th edition of the KLM Open with -16. Wu beat England’s Chris Wood with a birdie on the 18th hole, making him China’s most successful player at a European tournament. Next, to sponsoring hole no. 3, it was an indescribable feeling to see over 1500 officials, players, reporters, volunteers, and visitors wear Duca del Cosma shoes and gear. It was ‘Duca’ for as far as our eyes could see and we’ve never been more proud of our brand!

Our special KLM Open Duca del Cosma booth showcased our line of technical golf footwear, our lifestyle- and our gear collection. The booth drew in many people, to try on a pair of Duca KLM Open shoes or just to have a chat with the Duca team - and business was booming! We also had the pleasure to welcome some Dutch celebrities in the shop, like Dutch golfer Joost Luiten, and his lovely partner Melanie Lancaster, Feyenoord soccer player Jens Toornstra and Olympic Speedskating Champion Marianne Timmer, who, next to skating also has a big passion for golf. Marianne was so happy with her new Duca’s that she couldn’t help doing a little shout-out on social media. Meeting the Nestor of Dutch Golf Robbie van Ervens Dorens and Inge Langhout at our stand, was one of the highlights of the KLM Open for the Duca team.

The birth of a brand: when all pieces of the puzzle fall into place

Meanwhile, Sanne took a stab at beating the pro

Physical therapist Sanne Wolfbuttel recently won a Facebook competition by sharing a photo of herself in her best ‘beat the pro’ outfit. Next to winning a pair of Duca’s and a matching outfit, she was invited to try to beat the pro at the KLM Open. And boy did she deliver, beating two out of three pro’s, not bad Sanne, well done!

Bas and Julia reported live from the KLM Open

Bas and Julia, who kept our social channels buzzing during the whole event, had the opportunity to play Pro-am with our Pro golfer Stuart against English Golf professional Paul Waring. Paul earned his first European Tour win celebrating his 200th event, the 2018 Nordea Masters. scoring The Duca team scored a lovely -7, not bad at all.
